Consummate love =

Commitment, Intimacy & Passion

Wikipedia Definition; Sternberg’s Book

The Triangular Theory

Robert J. Sternberg’sExternal Link triangular theory of love considers three independent components of a complete, enduring, and romantic love he calls “consummate love”. The three components are intimacy, passion, and commitment, with these definitions:

Intimacy is defined as feelings of being close to and bonded with a partner. It requires exposing vulnerabilities. Agreement with the statements: “I feel close to my significant other” and “I receive considerable emotional support from my significant other” measure intimacy.

Passion refers to the arousal you experience toward your partner, including sexual attraction. An example is agreement with the statements: “I find my significant other to be personally attractive” and “I fantasize about my significant other”.

Commitment consists of making two decisions; one, that you love your partner, and two, that you desire to maintain that love and stay with your partner. It is a long-lasting and stable concern for the other. A person committed to a relationship tends to agree with the statement: “I will always feel a strong responsibility for my significant other.”

Wikipedia Definition ; Merriam Webster ; Find Articles

Most of us know the word “catharsis”, but mistakenely attribute it solely to Sigmund Freud. In fact, Joseph Breuer coined the term and was the first to start practicing talk therapy.  Freud looked up to Breuer and learned a lot from him! “Tired of 9 Million hits that don’t answer your Practice question?  Try PsycLINK instead!

Clinicians now have an interactive, online forum where they can find, share and discuss resources and useful web sites like practice management tools, anxiety, dementia, postpartum depression, and other topics relevant to their practices. Part social networking site, part community bulletin board, PsycLINK is a wiki platform “by psychologists, for psychologists.” Psychologists can also use PsycLINK to pose questions and receive e-mail updates when members add new content.

APA’s Presidential Task Force on Advancing Practice developed the new tool, and the Task Force believes PsycLINK will grow over time and increase in value as practitioners add to the content.
